What Is Reading

Reading is defined as the ability to examine words and absorb the information within. It is also a multifarious process involving word recognition, comprehension, fluency, and motivation. However, reading is actually a very complex process that requires a great deal of active participation, especially, the message is not something given in advance, or given at all, or even there are many words that are unknown. Thus, the reading strategies can help the readers to read in a very efficient way and to get the maximum benefit from their reading with the minimum effort. One of the reading strategies is to use context clues while reading. They are words and phrases in a sentence which help us reason out the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

When we are reading a text or an article, the problem we usually face is that there are many words or vocabularies we don’t know. Then we fail to understand the topic even unable to continue reading it. It wastes time if we insist to look the words up in the dictionary. Therefore, using context clues is a way to help us not only reason the meanings out but also can build up our vocabulary. The context clues are the hints that authors give us in the story, and usually presented in the sentence or paragraph in which the word occurs.
